The world of sports is witnessing an intriguing collaboration as former Formula One drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen join forces with tennis legend Novak Djokovic and Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois to back Le Mans FC's remarkable journey back to the top of French football.
This star-studded investment group, led by Brazilian firm OutField, has breathed new life into a club that was once on the brink of financial ruin. With just one point needed from their upcoming match against Bastia, Le Mans FC is on the verge of securing promotion to Ligue 1, a feat they haven't achieved since 2010.
The Motorsport Connection
What makes this partnership particularly fascinating is the natural synergy between motorsport and the town of Le Mans, synonymous with the legendary 24-hour endurance race. Massa and Magnussen's involvement is a testament to this connection, as their relationship with Georgios Frangulis, founder of Oakberry and now an investor at Le Mans, facilitated their entry into the project.
Frangulis, married to world number one tennis player Aryna Sabalenka, played a pivotal role in bringing Djokovic on board.
"[Frangulis] told us that Djokovic is crazy about football. We spoke to Djokovic, he liked the project, so he decided to invest," said Pedro Oliveira, co-founder of OutField.
The addition of Courtois, who joined in February, further solidifies the star power behind this venture.
A Strategic Takeover
Club president Thierry Gomez emphasizes the importance of having investors with a strong sporting background.
"It is crucial that they understand the sports industry and its unique dynamics," Gomez said.
The takeover by OutField was an opportunity for Le Mans FC to accelerate its growth rather than a necessity for survival. When OutField approached, the club was financially stable but lacked the resources to break through and reach new heights.
"There was no urgency; the club didn't need saving, but it did need a boost to propel it forward," Gomez added.
Youth Development: The Key to Success
OutField's strategy revolves around nurturing young talent rather than splurging on expensive signings. The club's academy, which has been closed since 2013, is set to reopen in July, becoming the cornerstone of their project.
"Today, the focus is on developing our own players. We want to create a sustainable model that allows us to compete at the highest level without breaking the bank," Gomez explained.
This philosophy is not only a practical necessity but also a nod to Le Mans FC's historical strength in nurturing talents like Didier Drogba and Gervinho.
"By investing in our academy, we can access tomorrow's stars at a young age. Having the next Kylian Mbappe at Le Mans is an exciting prospect and a key part of our long-term vision," Gomez added.
A Bright Future
Manager Patrick Videira has played a crucial role in guiding the club to its current success, achieving back-to-back promotions and consolidating their position in Ligue 2.
Oliveira outlined their ambitious goals for the future:
"In seven years, we aim to establish ourselves firmly in Ligue 1, become one of the top academies in France, and build a brand that is recognized globally. We believe in the power of youth development and the potential of this project."
This collaboration between sports stars and a rising football club is a testament to the power of synergy and a shared vision for success. With their eyes firmly set on the future, Le Mans FC is poised to make a lasting impact on the French football landscape.
