David Gusta's Performance at the NFL Combine: A Closer Look
The NFL Combine is a showcase for athletes, and on the first day of athletic testing, a former Kentucky Wildcat named David Gusta stole the spotlight. Defensive trench players, known for their edge presence, dominated the drills at Lucas Oil Stadium. Among them, David Bailey, a former Texas Tech pass-rusher, impressed with a 4.5 40-yard dash while weighing 251 pounds. But it was Gusta's performance that truly caught the NFL world's attention.
Gusta, a former Kentucky defensive tackle, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.88 seconds, the fifth-fastest among players at his position. His quickness off the line was remarkable, covering 10 yards in just 1.68 seconds, which was the second-fastest by a defensive tackle. These impressive numbers showcased his potential as an explosive interior disruptor.
Despite not making a significant noise, Gusta's reliability in the trenches for the Wildcats and his strong performance at the NFL Combine made a strong case for him to be a day three selection in the NFL Draft. His positional size might not be the best, but his performance at the Combine proved his potential as a valuable asset.
Hailing from San Bernardino, California, Gusta started all 12 games for Kentucky in 2025 as a nose guard. He recorded 12 total tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss, one sack, and three quarterback hurries. Gusta's career began at Washington State, where he finished with 36 starts in 44 appearances, 74 tackles, 9.0 TFLs, and 2.5 sacks.
The NFL Combine continues on Friday, with a few former Wildcats returning to action on Saturday.
